Squeaky doors & sticking latches: renter-safe quick fixes
Important: These guides focus on low-risk, reversible steps. If your lease forbids a modification (or the task involves gas/electrical/structural work), stop and contact maintenance.
Fix squeaky hinges (fast)
- Open the door halfway.
- Wipe dust off the hinge knuckles.
- Add a small amount of lubricant (a drop or two) to the hinge pin area.
- Swing the door 10–15 times to work it in, then wipe excess.
If the latch sticks or the door rubs
Most sticking issues are alignment, not "bad doors". Try these checks:
- Loose hinge screws: gently tighten (don't strip).
- Strike plate alignment: see if the latch hits high/low; minor adjustments may help.
- Swollen wood (humidity): improve ventilation and humidity control (see mold prevention).
What not to do
- Don't sand or plane doors in a rental without permission.
- Don't use sticky lubricants that attract dirt.
